- Our story
Ichthys Aquaponics was started in 2004 by Barry Enslin under the name of Enslin Aquaponics and is one of the few commercial aquaponics farms in South Africa. Barry was one of the aquaponic pioneers in South Africa, and a leading researcher in the industry. In 2015 the name was changed to Ichthys Aquaponics when Barry decided it was time to retire. Justin and Nikki Hess have taken over the running of the business and have continued much of the research Barry started. Justin has received certification from the Aquaponics Institute of Australia, Murray Hallam and James Rakosky.
- Areas of expertise
Over the past 14 years, we have gained valuable experience in setting up and running commercial aquaponics. We have turned this knowledge into a condensed, highly informative and practical one day course that takes place on the farm. In addition, we have the largest red breast (rendalli) hatchery in South Africa.
Our fresh produce (both fish and vegetables) is sold to local supermarkets, as well as to the public.
