Why is aquaponics the best way to grow food?justdabugYou have access to healthy and fresh organic produce that is GMO-free and you get additional protein from fish. The food also grows twice as fast as traditionally-grown produce, and you can grow year-round. By looking at the carbohydrate and mineral value of the produce from aquaponics, the quality of the food is at a much higher level. Our aquaponics-grown produce is more nutritious and healthy than on organic farms.
Which plants should you use in aquaponics?justdabugThe fish and plants you select for your aquaponic system should have similar needs as far as temperature and pH. There will always be some compromise to the needs of the fish and plants but, the closer they match, the more success you will have. As a general rule, warm, fresh water, fish and leafy crops such as lettuce and herbs will do the best. In a system heavily stocked with fish, you may have luck with fruiting plants such as tomatoes and peppers. The types of vegetables that we grow using aquaponics include: Fancy lettuce varieties
- Butter lettuce
- Red Oak
- Green Oak
- Fancy tomatoes
Why use fish in aquaponics?justdabugAquaponics uses the water from fish tanks to circulate through a plant growth-bed. Nitrifying bacteria convert the fish waste into nutrients that the plants can absorb. The plants then use these nutrients as their main supply. By doing this the plants and the fish flourish. The fish we use - Tilapia Rendalli - are able to process whole foods. What this means is that Rendalli thrive on a diet of grass, lettuce, duckweed, comfrey, lucern, banana leaves and a whole lot more. As a result, it is easy to either grow or source food that is free. In any aquaculture venture food costs account for between 30 and 50% of all costs – so if you can remove it from the equation, why wouldn’t you?!
